OUR ETHICS POLICY

Why is ordering from The Bug Club one of the best investments you can make to protect & develop the natural world?

All of the specimens we use to hand craft our products are purchased directly from several Entomologists who own conservation farms in Indonesia, Peru & England. Here at The Bug Club, we are passionate about protecting the natural world & giving back to local communities. By sourcing our specimens from these farms we are contributing to many factors, such as giving local people in developing areas of the world an incentive to protect the natural world, a good source of income, & promoting the beauty of the natural world.

All of our specimens live their full lifespan in good conditions and are bred in conservation farms, which helps to prevent these remarkable creatures from being taken from their natural habitat.

SUSTAINABLE SOURCING

Whilst butterflies like the Camberwell Beauty only live for a week, some butterflies live up to 4 weeks. The farm are committed to releasing 10% of each newly bred species back into the wild to continue the growth of the wild population; this is where your orders help to ensure we are keeping the forest filled with these beautiful creatures. Other families of bugs typically live for 2 weeks to 12 months, and the same rule applies - 10% of each species bred at the conservation are released into natural environments.

OUR MISSION

Reducing our environmental impact is at the forefront of what we do.

DIRECTLY SOURCING FROM LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Raising insects to sell is often the only incentive for local indigenous people to protect the environment and the natural wildlife, as it provides a source of income for locals. In turn, this is contributing to a better quality of life for those living in the communities, providing access to school, medication and clothing.

All our of our rarer butterflies & other bugs are also imported with the correct CITES paperwork.

IS BUTTERFLY FARMING SUSTAINABLE?

A single female butterfly can lay between 250 and 500 eggs in her lifetime, so very few female butterflies are required to start captive populations.

After starting a population, there is really only a need to return to the wild to find males occasionally; this ensures the captive population has good genetic diversity.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Designing our way to a greener future.

ARE ANY BUGS KILLED FOR FRAMING PURPOSES?

Absolutely not, this would go against the whole ethos of The Bug Club. As mentioned above, butterflies only typically live 1-2 days, with some living up to 4 weeks.  Once a butterfly has hatched from its pupae (changed from a caterpillar into a butterfly) its sole purpose is to reproduce. Some species even transform with no way of feeding! The butterfly will find a nice spot to lay its eggs and then its journey is complete.

CARBON OFFSETTING

The staff at The Bug Club take a keen interest in Entomology and giving back to the planet. We’re constantly reviewing the ways in which we can make things more eco friendly. We are working hard to be a carbon neutral brand; we invest in planting trees to offset our carbon emissions and continue to do our part for the planet.

100% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable to reduce our environmental impact.

We source packaging from suppliers who use recycled material in as many aspects of our design & production process as possible. Additionally, we always use materials which are recycled or reusable to reduce our environmental impact. Our regular donations to tree planting means we are on the way to becoming a carbon neutral brand.
